Advanced Legal Research // hybrid

Welcome to the course website.

ALR will build upon basic skills from the 1L legal research course and will cover some of the more complex research issues you will encounter in practice. It also covers useful skills such as how to pull a docket and how to write an effective FOIA request.

The class will be taught as a hybrid course using both online and in-person learning. For the avoidance of doubt, however, less time in face-to-face classes does not mean less work. Out of class learning may involve videos, readings, discussions, and brief exercises on which you will received individualized feedback.

The course is designed to be practical, hands-on, and collaborative. Be advised that the class requires frequent computer and internet access. Outside of class, class communication will be via email and/or Slack.

The grade will be based on in-class and out-of-class exercises, the creation of a research guide on a topic to be agreed, and a take home assignment consisting of a series of research problems testing what we learned in class.

Research Topics

The course will cover the following six general topics, although the specific content will be tailored to the interests and needs of the class, where possible.
